Porcilis PRRS - safety
The safety of Porcilis PRRS in pigs is determined by three characteristics.
The characteristics determining that Porcilis PRRS is a safe vaccine are:
- The parent strain used to make the DV strain is safe and of very low virulence.
- After adaptation, the DV strain lost its ability to lyse macrophages and is therefore unable to achieve high virus titres in the host. As a consequence both vaccinal virus spread and tissue damage are kept to a minimum.
- Because macrophages are not destroyed by the vaccinal virus, the immune system's first line of defence is unaffected so there is no immunosuppressive effect of vaccination.
These features are further supported by the experimental data generated in safety trials. Follow the links in the left hand menu to go to the various safety trials.
