Porcilis PRRS is a live vaccine intended for use in grower/finisher pigs, gilts and sows. The vaccine protects against the consequences of PRRSV infection.
The laboratory efficacy studies were carried out using SPF pigs.
Clinical respiratory signs cannot be induced by a PRRSV challenge alone. The symptoms associated with PRRSV in the field are caused by PRRSV in combination with other PRDC pathogens.
As these specific circumstances cannot be successfully reproduced under laboratory conditions, the reduction of viraemia after challenge is used to evaluate the efficacy of a PRRSV vaccine.

Safety is always a strong argument in favour of the use of inactivated vaccines. However, in the case of PRRS, inactivated vaccines seem to lack efficacy.
Several trials with inactivated vaccines, using various formulations and commercially available preparations have been done. No immune response or protection could be induced by any of the vaccines tested. Once inactivated, PRRSV seems to lack any immunogenicity.
